L’Hirondelle Tax Clinic

Back to news

Every year, tax season is a key moment for Quebec residents. For newcomers and those unfamiliar with the Canadian tax system, filling out your tax return can seem complex. Fortunately, there are resources available to help you, including the tax clinic offered by L’Hirondelle. In this article, we explain what you need to know about filing your income tax return in Montreal, and how our clinic can help you through the process.

Why is it important to file your tax return?

The tax return enables the government to calculate the amount of tax you owe, or the credits and refunds to which you are entitled. By completing your return correctly, you can benefit from a number of advantages, such as :

  • Tax refunds if you have paid too much tax on your income.
  • Access to certain credits and benefits (Canada Child Allowance, GST/QST credit, housing assistance, etc.).
  • Update your tax file to avoid potential problems with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec.

Who can benefit from the L’Hirondelle Tax Clinic?

L’Hirondelle offers a free tax clinic for low-income earners, based on these eligibility criteria:

  • Born outside Canada
  • Valid immigration status
  • Modest income and simple financial situation

What documents do I need to prepare?

Our tax clinic is staffed by trained and experienced volunteers who will help you complete your tax return according to the current rules. Here’s how to benefit from this service:

  • Tax information sheets
  • Statements (employment, education, social assistance, benefits, housing, etc.)
  • Official receipts (daycare, schooling, medical care…)
  • Notice of assessment for the previous year (or estimated foreign income if this is your first tax return)
